West African History Research Assignment Ms. Bedford-Carter/Ms. F. D. Brown: 11th Grade Students
Today and tomorrow, we will be using Voice Thread, a free online tool which combines audio and digital imaging to create lively, engaging presentations. To prepare, we will gather and save pictures that relate to West Africa and your discussion topics. This assignment will be broken down into four parts:
I. Research and discussion questions (research was ongoing all semester, discussion questions distributed by your teacher yesterday).
II. Use Google or Yahoo Images to find a map of West Africa and a picture that relate to your sub-topic of West-African Culture. Save the pictures and/or edit your pictures and add text using Microsoft PowerPoint.Save this portion of your work also.
III. Create VoiceThread by uploading your pictures and recording supplemental audio using digital microphones and/or cellular phones.
IV. Embed Voice Thread into Student Wikis. I will walk around to assist you throughout the process! Directions: First, open Internet Explorer. Go to www.google.com Click on Images. In the search box, type “West African Map” Open and select a map for your project. Right click on the image, select save as, and save your map on the Desktop. Next, search for a West African image that relates to your group’s discussion topic (Ex. Drum, instrument, etc.) Select and save this image following the same steps you used to save your map. Move the mouse to the lower left hand side of the screen: Locate the Start Menu. Click on Start. Locate and open Microsoft Power Point. Click Layout. Choose Picture with Caption. Click on the icon in the center of the slide. Click Desktop, and select the picture of your African map. Double click on your file. Click the Insert Title Box. Give this slide a title. Click the box below to add any additional text about this image.
At the top, click New Slide. Click layout and again select picture with caption. Insert your second picture, give it a title and add any text. Click on the colorful circle and choose save as: give your file a name. Where it says save as type, click the arrow, scroll down and select JPEG FILE interchange format. Click Save. When asked if you want to import every slide in the presentation, click every slide.

Log onto: jbcone.wikispaces.com (Jbctwo), etc...
On the left hand side of the screen, find Voice Threads and click on this link:
Click on the “widget” icon (blue, looks like a small tv)
On the bottom left side of the screen, click on “add other html”.
Paste the code you copied from Voice Thread
Click Save
Click Save (upper right hand side)
Your information is now saved on your personal wiki for your teacher and parents (anyone) to view.
